Linguica or Kielbasa Sausage and Peppers Skillet

Linguica or Kielbasa Sausage and Peppers Skillet

Sometimes the simplest recipe can taste the best! Linguica or kielbasa sausage and peppers only requires 5 ingredients and it doesn’t get any easier (or tastier) to get dinner on the table!

Cade spent 2 years serving as a missionary for our church, and he totally fell in love with the food there. I mean, how could you not, right?! It is SO good! I’m trying to add more delicious Brazilian dishes to our dinner rotation, and this linguica recipe is my latest! Cade says that it is spot on!

We used to visit a Brazilian restaurant every January here in Utah to celebrate Cade’s birthday but over the years it’s gone from delicious to downright terrible. So, I’ve started making more Brazilian recipes from home, kind of like our pao de queijo!

Linguica is so good but it can be a bit tricky to find so feel free to use any sausage like a kielbasa for example that you’d like! Just be sure to pair it with black beans and perfect white rice, or better yet, some feijoada!

Ingredients for Linguica Sausage and Peppers

Remember how 5 ingredients is all you need?! I am allllll about a recipe with minimal ingredient but still bold in flavor. Here is the list of things you will need:

  • Linguica Sausage – a flavorful pork sausage that can be tricky to find sometimes, so you can substitute other sausages if you want – chorizo would be a good substitute or a kielbasa
  • Mini Bell Peppers – I love how thin and sweet the mini bell peppers are, but you can totally use a full size bell pepper if you need to. I would do one yellow and one red.
  • Green Bell Peppers – just remove the seeds and slice that baby nice and thin
  • Red Onion – you honestly can use any type of onion you want or have on hand, I just happened to have a red one when I photographed this recipe.
  • Olive Oil – used to caramelize the peppers and onions

The measurements for every ingredient are listed in the recipe card at the end of this post.

What is Linguiça Sausage?

Linguiça (pronounced lin-gwee-sah) sausage is smoke-cured pork sausage that is seasoned with chili, garlic and paprika. It is most popular in Portugal and Brazil. It packs so much fantastic flavor! Even though it can be tricky to find at the store, I would highly recommend trying your darnedest to get it because the flavor really can’t be replicated.

The Secret to Good Sausage

One thing about sausage is we tend to want to throw it in and cook it fast but it’s actually even better if you give it a little time. The flavors really develop and infuse the peppers and onions at it all slowly cooks together. Low and slow baby!

What to Eat with Linguica Sausage and Peppers

In Brazil, they are all about the rice and beans, but I have made mashed potatoes on the side before and I loved the creamy, buttery notes they added to the plate. If you stick with the classic rice, we have a whole post on how to make the perfect white rice. We also have a recipe for Brazilian coconut rice, which is also delicious with this sausage and peppers.

Black beans is the usual go-to in Brazil, so I just make them with a little bay leaf, garlic powder, salt and simmer. Then I sauté a little onion and garlic in a pan until tender and then mash up a few tablespoons of the beans in it and stir in the rest of the beans.

Where Can I Buy Linguica?

I have had luck finding linguica at Walmart and Smith’s, so just your average grocery stores. You don’t have to go to a specialty store. You will find it right by the other pork sausages in the refrigerated section.

Someday Cade is going to take me to Brazil and show me all the places and people he grew to love there, but until that time comes, I’m going to keep gobbling up linguica a nd peppers! So dang delicioso!
