What is a Club Sandwich?

A club sandwich, also called a clubhouse sandwich, is a sandwich of bread (occasionally toasted), sliced cooked poultry, or fried bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, cheese and usually three slices of bread.

It is often cut into quarters or halves and held together by cocktail sticks.

What Goes in a Club Sandwich?

As with most sandwiches, club sandwiches can be customized to your liking, but generally club sandwiches have turkey, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo and cheese. We are leveling up the traditional club sandwich with this recipe though with a few more toppings. Here is what you will need:

  • Bread: a high quality white bread or multigrain bread
  • Mayonnaise: any brand works great
  • Green Leaf Lettuce: you could also use romaine
  • Tomato: hothouse, vine ripe, or heirloom tomatoes are preferred
  • Deli Roasted Turkey: take the time to stop at the meat counter and get some of the good turkey
  • Deli Ham: you can get smoked ham, black forest ham or honey ham…whichever you prefer
  • Granny Smith Apple: Trust me on this one! It adds a pop of sweetness and tang. So good!
  • Smoked Cheddar Cheese: we always buy Tillamook but you can buy any good high quality brand of cheese
  • Applewood Smoked Bacon: or you can buy brown sugar bacon and cook it until it’s nice and crispy
  • Avocado: adds creaminess and just yumminess
  • Salt and Pepper: add a little to the tomato slices and/or the avocado

Garlic Basil Mayo

  • Mayonnaise: whatever your favorite brand is
  • Basil: must be fresh
  • Garlic: you can just throw the clove in whole
  • Lemon: fresh lemon zest

The measurements and details for all the ingredients can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post. You can also save or print the recipe th

Welcome to the weekend, my friends! Is it even possible for me to go a whole week without commenting on the gorgeous, amazing, spectacular Ohio weather? I love our glorious chilly mornings so much right now. (I’m choosing to ignore the fact we’re supposed to be back in the 90s for a few days next week.) I just wanted to let you know I’m still in love with my little corner of the world.

ON THE BLOGS this week: Loaded with robust garlic, zesty lemon, and a kick of red pepper flakes, this Garlic Butter Sauce (a.k.a. Cowboy Butter Sauce) transforms any vegetable into something crave-worthy.

Melted Parmesan cheese, fresh garlic, and tender chicken are twirled with fettuccine noodles in this creamy Garlic Parmesan Chicken Pasta.

Packed with bold, tangy flavor and just a hint of heat, this BBQ Cauliflower is sure to be the star of your next meal. (I’ve made this for lunch twice in the past couple of weeks. I can’t get enough of this saucy cauliflower!)

With a perfect blend of tender pasta, creamy dressing, and a medley of fresh vegetables, this Old Fashioned Macaroni Salad is bursting with flavor.

Every bite of this Shrimp Zucchini Stir Fry is pure shrimp-loving heaven – and you can make it start to finish in under 15 minutes! Garlic butter shrimp is one of my top 5 favorite foods. So naturally, when I had the idea to pair some shrimp with perfectly tender-crisp zucchini and toss it in a mouthwatering lemon garlic butter sauce, that had to happen immediately.

Pralines and Cream Ice Cream

My grandfather used to take me to Baskin Robbins and he always ordered a scoop of pralines and cream ice cream. I’ll admit that when I was little, I often ordered bubblegum ice cream, but eventually, Grandpa’s creamy ice cream with that caramel swirl and chewy pralines grew on me.

Over the years, this has become the one flavor I can not resist whenever it is available. And yes, I’m brand-loyal here. I’ll make a special stop at Baskin Robbins when I’m near one, just for a scoop of Grandpa’s favorite ice cream.

Over the past 10-12 years, I’ve tried a few times to recreate that ice cream at home and it simply wasn’t the same. Let’s just say that figuring out the perfect homemade pralines and cream ice cream has been a bit of a journey.

I’m ecstatic today to be savoring a bowl of absolutely perfect homemade pralines and cream ice cream while I write this post. Creamy, not-too-sweet vanilla ice cream is matched with buttery sweet salted caramel swirls and chunks of chewy praline pecans in every bite. &

Praline Pecans

Pecan pralines (also known simply as pralines) are a type of sweet candied nut made primarily from sugar, butter, cream, and pecans. Pralines have a distinct creamy texture and a rich, caramelized flavor.

To make them, butter and sugar are cooked until a sauce begins to form. The pecans are then stirred in to coat them well. Then the pecans are transferred to parchment and separated to cool.

What are Praline Pecans?

The resulting pecans are softer with a slightly grainy finish due to the crystallization of the sugar. They’re usually round or irregularly shaped and can vary in size.

Pecan pralines are enjoyed as a standalone candy or used to add a sweet and nutty element to various desserts, like ice creams, cakes, and pies.

Cowboy Butter Dipping Sauce

This recipe was inspired by a scoop of leftover cowboy butter. And let me tell you, every vegetable dipped in this sauce was very happily devoured. I’ve since decided to keep cowboy butter on hand for all eternity.

My success with the cowboy butter recipe had me wondering whether I could make a cowboy butter dipping sauce. Turns out, you can! The golden elixir it produces is not simply a sauce; it’s a whole experience.

Lemon Butter Sauce for Asparagus

I’ve made this a couple of different ways and I like it best as made below. Yes, you can melt the butter on the stove and simply add the other ingredients to it at that point.

However, I found that the fresh taste of the lemon, garlic, and parsley are best preserved when made as directed, then warmed in smaller portions as needed. If you have a better strategy, I’d love to hear about it.

If you know that you’ll be using a full batch of this garlic butter sauce recipe, make it with whichever method you find easiest. Just remember that once melted, it will not keep as nicely as the compound butter made in this recipe.

You can absolutely use other vegetables with this sauce. But, if you’re looking for a place to start, you can’t go wrong with a side of roasted lemon butter asparagus using this recipe.
