The Best Buttermilk Syrup Recipe

Top your favorite sweet breakfast recipe with liquid gold, aka buttermilk syrup, the best syrup on earth!

It is the best topping for pancakes, waffles, french toast and just about anything else you can imagine. It’s thick, sweet, buttery and totally divine. It tastes like you are pouring buttery caramel all over your breakfast. Think Kneaders or Magleby’s syrup for all my Utah readers.

This is one of those recipes that I grew up with and I don’t know why, but it took me years to remember it and bring it back with my family. It’s absolutely the best syrup around and trust me, you have to try it yourself to understand. It’s not at all buttermilk-y in taste, but creamy, light, sweet, and oh so amazing. It tastes like a caramel sauce but lighter. I can barely stand to not lick my plate when breakfast is over just to get ever last bit. Ok, I do…I lick my plate clean and I am not ashamed!

Ingredients Needed for Buttermilk Syrup

All you need is 6 ingredients to make this homemade buttermilk syrup and most of them are pantry staples. Here is what you will need…

  • Butter: unsalted is preferred and it creates the base for the syrup
  • White Sugar: just regular granulated sugar
  • Buttermilk: makes the syrup extra creamy
  • Vanilla: adds flavor
  • Corn Syrup: enhances the caramel flavor
  • Baking Soda: The secret ingredient that may seem odd but trust me! It can’t be skipped!

How to Make Buttermilk Syrup

Making this buttermilk syrup recipe at home takes less than 10 minutes and can totally be done simultaneously while you are cooking pancakes or waffles. Here are the basic steps…

  1. Melt: Get the butter melting in a large saucepan on the stove top over medium heat. Add the sugar, buttermilk, vanilla and corn syrup and stir everything to combine.
  2. Boil: Allow the mixture to come to a rolling bowl and then remove the pan from the heat and add the baking soda stirring it in to combine.
    • NOTE: The syrup will foam up quite a bit (see picture below to see the amount of foam, this is totally normal) so make sure your pot is big with plenty of room. I will sometimes hold my pan over the sink when I add the baking soda just in case it foams over. We don’t want a sugary mess all over the stove top! There’s nothing worse!
  3. Simmer: Place the pan back over the heat and whisk for about 30 seconds to allow everything to incorporate. Then it is ready to serve!

Especially if you choose to make muffins like our Crumb Banana Bread Muffin recipe because muffins that are over mixed are flat topped.

This is a recipe our daughter created when she was only 7 years old and it was the perfect opportunity for me to teach her about the banana bread rules.

Banana Bread Rules

  • Ripe Bananas- This is a tricky one as everyone claims a banana to be ripe at different points, but I would look for medium bananas that are starting to brown and are heavily covered in freckles. Once the banana has gone black its sugar and water content is different and can lead to a lame finished product.
  • Use a regular loaf pan instead of a very large one and I’ve found that metal actually works best.
  • If you’re not comfortable with the tap test to be sure it’s cooked through, gently insert a toothpick into the center and it should come out clean.
  • All purpose flour is best here, but you can experiment with half whole wheat as well.
  • Sweet White Chocolate melts down in the loaf and disappears a bit so don’t be shocked if you don’t slice the bread and find chocolate chips everywhere.

After we created our best moist banana bread recipe (you guys, it literally took us years and years, no joke) we were dying to take a break, er I mean try even more recipes, haha.

Ok, it was a balance of both. On the one hand we really did need a break from banana bread, but on the other our minds were suddenly bubbling with ideas. The banana bread is super moist thanks to the oil and mashed bananas, but what’s really awesome about it is that it almost has a slight churro flavor with the hint of cinnamon and those creamy white chocolate chips. My goodness, she nailed it!!

This might make me a grandma, but I am obsessed with cornmeal mush! There is just something so comforting and simple about it. It is creamy, fulfilling and and warms me up from the inside out.

I’m writing this post 5 days before Christmas so I’m in a Christmas frame of mind. I think I might even make this for Christmas breakfast this year! So whether you’re a kid from 1 to 92, this breakfast recipe is for you! It might make you feel like you are 92, but you’ll also melt for it’s warm and simple goodness. And some things are worth melting for! Thanks, Olaf, for that one!

Don’t just limit yourself to breakfast either! This recipe makes a great lunch or quick and simple dinner!

What is Cornmeal Mush?

Picture the porridge from Goldilocks and the three bears, and that is cornmeal mush! At least that’s what I always picture. Cornmeal mush is a Southern meal that combines cornmeal with water or milk. It simmers together on the stove until it is creamy and delicious. If you are familiar with Cream of Wheat, it is similar to that in consistency, but it uses corn instead of wheat. 

Ingredients for Cornmeal Mush

You only need 3 ingredients for this home cooked comfort, and it’s great for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Here is all you need:

  • Milk – you can use any type of milk (whole, 2%, 1%, fat free) or you can even use water if you prefer, but milk is my favorite
  • Cornmeal – 
  • Salt – adds flavor
  • Toppings – feel free to make this dish your own with the toppings, see suggestions below.

How to Make Cornmeal Mush

It’s a very simple process that begins bringing some of the milk to a boil. Be careful to not let it burn. In a separate bowl, you combine more milk with the cornmeal and salt until it is smooth. Then you pour the milk and cornmeal mixture into the boiling milk whisking constantly. Turn the heat down to the low and stir everything together until the mush thickens.

Toppings for Cornmeal Mush

Serve the cornmeal mush with a drizzle of cream, honey, or maple syrup. You could add berries or chopped nuts or bananas. You can really add whatever toppings you love.

Is Cornmeal Mush the Same as Grits?

Grits is a type of cornmeal mush but the grind on the cornmeal is a little more coarse. Grits are often served savory with cheese and salt and pepper. Although grits can be served sweet on occasion. 

Is Cornmeal Mush Gluten Free?

Cornmeal on its own is gluten free so as long as everything add to it or on top of it is gluten free, then you are good to go! This recipe is gluten free.

Copycat Waffle Love Liege Waffle Recipe [+ Video]

This copycat Waffle Love liege waffle recipe is the closest we’ve found to our favorite food truck waffles here in Utah using a liege waffle. 

Remember when food trucks started popping up and became all the rage a few years back? The Waffle Love food truck was one of the original food trucks to go crazy here in Utah. They always had a line for days no matter where they were. In fact, they have now opened over a dozen brick and mortar locations in Utah, Idaho and California and their food truck is still going strong!

Waffle Love quickly became the go to family treat truck, date night truck, girls night out truck, and “I’ve got a hankering for something sweet” truck. The waffles are amazing and the little sugary bits really add something to the waffles, but you can’t forget about their awesome toppings which revolve around one of our household favorites, Biscoff. Stinking Biscoff. That stuff rocks our world.

I immediately started working on a copycat recipe so that we could make these irresistible waffles at home. After I figured out the perfect recipe, I posted it and it went crazy! So crazy that the aforementioned company contacted me and asked me to pull my recipe down because it was so close to theirs. Haha…nope! That, my friends, is when you’ve NAILED a copycat recipe! The people need to be able to make these at home, and so you shall!!

While we still love our bacon apple cider waffles, this copycat waffle love recipe is seriously fantastic, and it would be the perfect way to enjoy Christmas morning.

What is a Liège Waffle?

Liège waffles (pronounced “leej”) are a Belgian style waffle made from a yeast dough rather than traditional waffle batter. They are a little sweeter and different in texture once they are cooked.

Liège waffles are different than your normal run of the mill waffle. In fact you really should forget about the taste and texture of the normal breakfast waffle because this one is seriously a totally different taste, but delicious like you wouldn’t believe.

Leftover Cranberry Sauce Muffins with Streusel Topping

Grab that leftover cranberry sauce and make these sweet and tart cranberry sauce muffins. They make a great breakfast or brunch!

Last year I got fed up with all the leftover cranberry sauce so for months after, I tried sticking it in and on everything trying to find the best ways to use it. You can only eat leftover Thanksgiving turkey sandwiches for so many days before you’re totally burned out. In fact, our leftover Thanksgiving turkey sliders is a fabulous way to use leftover cranberry sauce, but I still wanted to find something different. These heavenly cranberry sauce muffins with streusel crumb topping were born.

Recommended Equipment

Before You Begin…

Make sure you have your cranberry sauce ready to go. Hopefully you have leftovers from Thanksgiving so this step is already done. You can make it homemade or use store bought cranberry sauce. I’ve linked to our homemade cranberry sauce recipe in the recipe card.

What Do I Need to Make Cranberry Sauce Muffins?

I’m going to divide the list of ingredients up between the streusel topping and the muffin batter. Jump on the streusel topping first…

For the Streusel

  • All-Purpose Flour: gives the streusel topping structure
  • Light Brown Sugar: adds sweetness and rich flavor
  • Kosher Salt: enhances all the flavors
  • Cinnamon: adds warmth and that classic fall flavor
  • Ground Cardamom: I love the flavor of a little cardamom with cranberry sauce!
  • Butter: binds the streusel together, the key to a good streusel
