Italian Style Beef Chili

Italian style beef chili is hearty, satisfying and perfect for feeding a crowd! It has all the familiar and comforting flavors of lasagna, but it’s a chili!

A few weeks ago, I was working on our lasagna soup recipe and totally messed it up. So I improvised, like I often do when recipes don’t turn out the way I hope, and turned that recipe into a chili. It ended up being so fabulous that I had to photograph it and post it here.

Let this be a lesson that sometimes mistakes just end up being happy accidents…thanks Bob Ross!

What is Chili?

Chili is a thick stew that is usually a little spicy and made with peppers, chili powder, meat, tomatoes and often beans.

Ingredients in Italian Style Beef Chili

The ingredients list might seem a little lengthy, but all the components are crucial the developing the full flavor of the chili. Here is what you will need:

  • Vegetables: Olive Oil, Red Onion, Garlic, Red Bell Pepper, Green Bell Pepper, Jalapeno
  • Fresh Herbs: Oregano, Parsley, Basil
  • Seasonings and Spices: Salt, Pepper, Chili Powder, Smoked Paprika
  • Cheese: Ricotta and Mozzarella Cheese
  • Ground Beef: we use 85/15
  • Beef Broth: low sodium
  • Fire Roasted Diced Tomatoes
  • Marinara Sauce: Rao’s is our favorite brand
  • Pinto Beans

This is just an overview of the ingredients needed for this recipe. The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post.

How to Make Chili

One of my favorite things about making chili is developing all the layers of flavor that make it so rich and delicious. It takes time but it is really easy. Here are the basic steps:

  1. Sauté the vegetables and herbs.
  2. Brown the beef and drain the grease.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients (except the cheese) and let it simmer for at least a half hour up to all day for maximum flavor.
  4. Just before serving, top each bowl of soup with mozzarella and melt in the broiler. Make sure the bowl is oven safe!

The recipe card at the end of the post contains all the instructions in full detail. You can also print or save the recipe there.

What Toppings Go On Chili?

Everyone in my family likes to top their chili with different things so I like to put all sorts of options out and let everyone do their own thing. Some of our favorite toppings are sour cream (or plain Greek yogurt), diced onions, green onions, tortilla chips or corn chips, and more cheese or more fresh herbs.

What Goes Well with Italian Chili?

This chili recipe is hearty enough to stand on it’s own as a meal, but it is my personal opinion that chili should always be eaten with a side of bread for dipping! Here are a few ideas:

Chicken parmesan is breaded chicken that is then covered in a tomato sauce and topped with mozzarella, parmesan or sometimes even provolone cheese. It’s often eaten over pasta like spaghetti but can be eaten alone or as an entree. Sizzling Italian Dipping Oil for Bread

a photo of a shallow white bowl full of bread dipping oil fill of finely chopped fresh herbs and minced garlic.

Sizzling hot, full of fresh herbs and garlic with a little drizzle of sweet balsamic vinegar…the most irresistible dipping oil for bread. It soaks into the bread just a little and is the perfect appetizer or side dish for any meal.

Years ago when I was in college I was dating a boy that enjoyed cooking and baking. We had a lot of fun trying new recipes and because we were dating, my parents gave me a fancy set of oil and different seasonings for bread for one of my Christmas gifts. The relationship didn’t last but my love for bread and dipping oil totally did! Haha!

Take 10 minutes to make this dipping oil recipe, pull a fresh loaf of focaccia bread or a crusty artisan bread loaf out of the oven, and you have an elegant start to your authentic Italian bolognese dinner! You’ll feel like you’re sitting at a fancy Italian restaurant!

What Goes into Italian Dipping Oil?

Here are the ingredients you will need for this recipe:

  • Olive Oil – extra virgin, make sure it is good quality (from Italy or California is the best), extra virgin olive oil has a deeper and richer flavor
  • Garlic – fresh, not from a jar
  • Fresh herbs – parsley, oregano (or marjoram), rosemary and basil all minced really fine
    • PRO TIP: We love this combinations of fresh herbs, but you could use any combination you love! It’s so versatile! Add some thyme, omit the parsley…seriously whatever your family enjoys!
    • If you need to use dried herbs, double all the measurements for each herb.
  • Red Pepper Flakes – feel free to add more if you like more heat
  • Kosher Salt – adds flavor
  • Balsamic Vinegar – adds the most lovely hint of sweetness and acid to cut through the oil
  • Bread – I have been known to dip just about any bread into this oil. Heck, I’d dip a slice of white Wonderbread! See section below for specific suggestions.

The measurements for each ingredients can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

What Type of Olive Oil is Best for Dipping Oil?

You want a top quality, extra virgin olive oil for the best flavor. Extra virgin olive oil will hold up the best to all the flavors of the fresh herbs. Look for EVOO that is from Italy or California. EVOO can be expensive, but you only need 1/3 cup for this recipe, so buying the best is recommended and will last for a long time.

Can Other Types of Oil Be Used?

No, I would definitely not recommend using any other type of oil for making a dipping oil for bread. Other types of oil just don’t have the same rich flavor that you get from olive oil. Olive oil is also one of the healthiest types

a skillet full of saucy sauteed mushrooms

Delicious & The BEST Italian Sauteed Mushrooms Recipe in the world – this is one of my favorite side dishes my mama makes.

Ingredients You Need to Make the Best Sauteed Mushrooms:

  • Baby Bella Mushrooms: also called cremini mushrooms, they have a deep earthy flavor and beautiful color
  • Italian Dressing: You can make your own homemade Italian dressing or buy your favorite brand from the store. This is the secret sauce combined with the flavor of the bell peppers and onions…so dreamy!
  • Onion: just a yellow onion works great
  • Red Bell Pepper: you could also use orange or yellow
  • Salt and Pepper: adds flavor
  • Parsley: used for garnish

The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of this post. Keep scrolling for all the details!

Substitutions and Variations

If you can’t find baby bella mushrooms, white button mushrooms will work fine. They just will lack a little depth of flavor. Portobello mushrooms can also be used. You’ll just want to cut them into bite size pieces. Porcini, chanterelle or shiitake mushrooms are also options but they tend to be quite expensive. You can also do a combination of any of these.

Fresh parsley can be swapped for any variety of fresh herbs…thyme, oregano, or rosemary will all taste great.

If you want to add a little heat, add a pinch or two of red pepper flakes.

How to Clean Mushrooms

Mushrooms can sometimes have dirt on them when they are packaged. Be sure to wipe mushrooms with a dry paper towel to clean them. Don’t wash them in water or use a damp paper towel. Mushrooms are like sponges and will soak up water. You don’t want to add any extra moisture, and you want the mushrooms to soak up the Italian dressing flavors.
