The Best Muddy Buddies, AKA Puppy Chow Recipe just got a makeover. The DOUBLE PEANUT BUTTER Muddy Buddies recipes uses both peanut butter and peanut butter chips making it a peanut-butter-lovers dream snack! Why Our Muddy Buddies are Better

Listen, I have some issues with other recipes for puppy chow- too little clumping of peanut butter globs, too much or too little powdered sugar. Ugh, I want to indulge. I want to FEEL the heaviness of peanut butter goodness as clusters stuck together!

The Many Names of Puppy Chow

My mom and sister and I are in a group text and tonight’s text thread was about “muddy Buddies” vs “Puppy Chow”. I don’t know if it was a Pacific Northwest thing or an Idaho thing (that’s where my mom is from), but we call this treat “Puppy Chow.” Always have, always will. But the truth is, it has other names, like muddy buddies, monkey munch, dog food, Chex mix, but no matter what you call it, it’s delicious.

Our daughter and her friends make this recipe almost monthly making it a favorite in our household, (except for our famous GOOEY Peanut Butter M&M Cookies). I CANNOT stop eating either one!

Double Peanut Butter Muddy Buddies Recipe Ingredients

  • Creamy Peanut Butter: The star flavor! It coats the cereal, giving it that rich, nutty taste and helps the other ingredients stick together. Peanut butter also adds smoothness and makes the mix more satisfying.
  • Butter: Adds richness, a little extra flavor, and helps thin the peanut butter so it coats the cereal more evenly without clumping.
  • Peanut Butter Chips: Boost that peanut butter flavor even more and give the muddy buddies a creamy, candy-like coating when melted with the peanut butter.
  • Rice Chex Cereal: The crunchy base that holds everything together. Its light, crisp texture makes the perfect vessel for soaking up the peanut butter coating without gettin

Sweet gooey Chex mix recipe – One of those classic party or holiday snacks that seems so lame when you look at it, but you can’t stay out of it once you try it.

We had a friend bring over a bag for Christmas this last year. I grabbed a handful and then the next thing I knew, the whole bag was gone. My husband and kids didn’t even get a bite. Oopsies…a classic snaccident!

It’s really that good and that addicting. You have to try it!

This is such a yummy treat to eat while watching a movie or hanging at a party etc! The ultimate party mix! It’s so simple and it’s a nice change from popcorn. You could totally mix things up and add nuts too.

Ingredients for Sweet Chex Mix

It’s the simple things that are the best, right?! There is nothing crazy in this recipe, just simple ingredients blended together in the perfect way. Here is your grocery list:

  • Unsalted Butter
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Light Corn Syrup
  • Sugar
  • Corn Chex
  • Rice Chex
  • Golden Graham Cereal
  • Slivered Almonds
  • Shredded Coconut Flakes

The measurements for each ingredient can be found in the recipe card at the end of the post.

Variations and Substitutions

Feel free to add or swap any of the ingredients you want. Peanuts or cashews would be a great addition or mini pretzels. You can also swap the cereals for other ones you love…Wheat Chex, Crispix, Cheerios or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I’ve seen people use those crunchy chow mein noodles in this mix too or Bugles for a little more salty taste.

If you want to play with the flavor a little, swap the corn syrup for honey and/or the granulated sugar for brown sugar.

Not a coconut fan? Just omit it!

How to Make Sweet Chex Mix Recipe

Snack foods should be simple and quick in my book. Otherwise, you’ve missed the point of a snack. Am I right? Yes, yes I am! Here are the basics:

  1. Combine the cereals, nuts and coconut in a bowl and line two cookie sheets with parchment.
  2. Add the butter, corn syrup, vanilla and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil.
  3. Boil for 1 minute.
  4. Remove from the stove and pour over the cereal mixture.
  5. Stir together and then spread out on the parchment paper to cool.

These steps can be found in the recipe card below as well.

Scalable: It’s so easy to scale up or down in the recipe. If you’re making neighbor gifts for the oven

No Bake: There is no baking, no oven, no long hours in the kitchen. I don’t have time for that when the holidays come around, so this is a great option for a quick and simple snack.

Christmas White Chocolate Trash Chex Mix

This white chocolate trash Chex mix is sweet and salty, can be made in minutes using only the microwave, and makes great neighbor or coworker holiday gifts!

This is the best part of Christmas for me, the traditions that my kids love. Every year we have a pile of Christmas movies to get through and while I only care about 2, White Christmas and Elf. Our little guy is obsessed, No, OBSESSED with Elf and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (the new one not the old one). And over the years it has become something we all can’t wait to do because he’s SO EXCITED!

This last year he said, can we have a special Elf movie night with a Buddy the Elf snack?

HECK. YES. WE. CAN!

You can add maple syrup extract to the white chocolate if you want to, but I’ll be honest, it’s too much for me. Otherwise, just throw it all in there and no judgments if you want to add pop tarts or leftover candy corn (best of luck finding any to buy in December).

When Do You Watch Your First Christmas Movie?

Hey side note, when do you watch your first Christmas movie? White Christmas tends to be the movie we watch on Thanksgiving and I kind of love that tradition.

What are Your Favorite Christmas Movies?

We would love to have you all comment with your must-watch Christmas movies and then update this recipe next year or even a whole separate post of Christmas movies for the whole family to watch. FYI, I totally have a Chick Flick one if you’re interested…

What Ingredients Do I Need for White Chocolate Chex Mix?

The ingredients for this Chex mix can be changed based on what you have on hand. That is one of the reasons it is called “trash” Chex mix. It is meant for all the little leftover odds and ends you have in pantry that you might otherwise throw away. I’m going to give the ingredients that we love best, but feel free to make it your own!

  • Corn Chex
  • Rice Chex
  • Mini Pretzels
  • Mini Vanilla Wafers
  • Dry Roasted Peanuts
  • M&Ms (plain)
